Few names carry as much folklore as Beddgelert. Translated, it means “Gelert’s Grave” — and the story behind it is one of the most enduring legends in Wales, still drawing visitors to the mound beside the River Glaslyn today.
According to legend, Gelert was the faithful hound of Prince Llywelyn the Great. One day, Llywelyn returned from hunting to find his baby son’s cradle overturned and empty, with Gelert standing over it, jaws stained with blood. Believing the worst, Llywelyn drew his sword and killed the dog on the spot. It was only moments later that he heard his son crying, safe beneath the cradle, alongside the body of a great wolf that Gelert had fought off to protect him.
Grief-stricken by his mistake, Llywelyn is said to have buried Gelert with full honours on the riverbank, marking the grave with a cairn of stones. That spot, known today as Gelert’s Grave, sits a short, gentle walk from the village centre and remains one of the most visited places in Eryri (Snowdonia).
Historians are quick to point out that the tale likely predates Llywelyn himself, echoing older “faithful hound” legends found across Europe and Asia. Some suggest the story was popularised in the 18th century by a local innkeeper keen to draw visitors to the village — and if so, it worked rather well. True or not, the legend has become part of the fabric of Beddgelert, giving the village its name and its enduring sense of story.
If you’re visiting the shop, the walk to Gelert’s Grave takes around 20 minutes on foot from Waterloo House and makes for a lovely addition to an afternoon in the village.
